Casper ter Heerdt

Witness

11 September – 17 October

Opening event 10 September 6-9 pm

My work consists of models, objects, installations, and sculptural interiors. Using architecture as a medium, I create places that refer to personal experiences and memories—places conceived as environments in which an event has taken place or could take place. These spaces are furnished with objects, constructions, and structures that belong to our collective consciousness. I am the fly on the wall, looking at the world through a magnifying glass.

I see our surroundings as a human landscape, because this landscape reveals who we are. Caspar David Friedrich believed that an artist should not only paint what he sees in front of him, but also what he sees within himself. My work reflects this inner landscape. In my landscapes, we ourselves—human figures—are physically absent, yet conspicuously present.

My exhibition at Tension Fine Art will reflect on the idea of “witness” — from its fundamental meaning to its philosophical and moral implications. We look at one another and are looked at; online and offline, within everyday reality we are witnessing each other’s lives . We are witnesses to our contemporary society, in which on- and offline realities intersect and influence one another.

Bearing witness entails knowledge; as a witness we are not passive . Seeing creates responsibility: once something has been witnessed, neutrality is no longer possible.
